Earnings Report
NMDC Energy
1. Company Overview & Earnings Context
NMDC Energy reported strong top-line growth but significant margin and earnings pressure for the nine months ended 30 September 2026. Revenue increased 9% YoY to AED 14.2 billion, supported by strong execution of its project backlog despite regional geopolitical and operational challenges. However, EBITDA declined 34% to AED 840 million and net profit after tax fell 56% to AED 420 million.
The principal issue during 9M 2026 was therefore profitability rather than revenue generation. EBITDA margin contracted sharply to 5.9% from 9.7%, reflecting cost overruns and operational challenges following the deterioration in the regional geopolitical environment from March 2026.
Q3 remained affected by these pressures. Revenue was AED 4.73 billion, down 2% YoY but up 5% QoQ, while EBITDA declined 38% YoY to AED 291 million. Net profit reached AED 169 million, down 54% YoY but broadly stable sequentially. Management specifically attributed the profitability pressure primarily to higher logistics, insurance and fuel costs associated with the ongoing regional situation.

Trailing RoAE: 19.0%
The underlying picture is mixed. Project execution and revenue conversion remained strong, with 9M revenue increasing by more than AED 1.2 billion YoY. However, this additional revenue did not translate into earnings growth because cost escalation significantly compressed project margins.
The EBITDA margin decline of 380 bps to 5.9% is the central earnings issue. Nevertheless, Q3's 6.2% margin was above the 9M average, while Q3 net profit was broadly stable versus Q2, suggesting some sequential stabilization even though profitability remained substantially below prior-year levels.
3. Operating Performance & Major Programs
NMDC Energy continued executing a substantial project portfolio, with 72% of 9M revenue generated internationally and 28% locally. Offshore activities represented 56% of revenue and onshore operations 44%, highlighting the Group's significant international and offshore exposure.
New project awards totaled approximately AED 2.6 billion during 9M 2026, comprising:
AED 2.3 Billion – UAE: EPC offshore work for an undisclosed client, awarded in Q2 2026.
AED 0.3 Billion – UAE: EPC work for an EWEC diesel pipeline, awarded in Q3 2026.
Management noted that the EWEC project value is indicative because contractual terms remain under negotiation, although work has commenced.
The earnings-release headline reports current backlog of AED 33.0 billion, which includes projects awarded up to 25 October 2026. Management's September-end discussion separately states backlog of AED 29.8 billion, alongside an approximately AED 80.4 billion project pipeline.
The expected AED 33.0 billion backlog unwinding is approximately:
4Q 2026: AED 3.7 Billion
2027: AED 15.7 Billion
2028: AED 9.9 Billion
2029: AED 3.2 Billion
2030: AED 0.4 Billion
The backlog remains predominantly international at 76%, versus 24% local, while offshore projects represent 71% and onshore projects 29%. This provides substantial medium-term revenue visibility but also increases sensitivity to international execution conditions and offshore logistics.
Business development also focused heavily on localization. NMDC Energy signed agreements/MoUs covering the UAE's first manufacturing facility for Electro Submersible Pumps, potential steel-pipe coating solutions with Borouge, localization of valve manufacturing with Neway Valve, and modular fabrication for data centers with Wasco Energy.
4. Key Performance Drivers
Backlog execution drove revenue growth. Revenue increased 9% to AED 14.2 billion despite the difficult regional operating environment, demonstrating continued conversion of the existing project portfolio into reported revenue.
Cost overruns drove margin compression. Management identified operational challenges and cost overruns stemming from the geopolitical situation that began in March 2026. In Q3 specifically, the company highlighted elevated logistics, insurance and fuel costs as major profitability headwinds.
This explains the disconnect between 9% revenue growth and a 34% EBITDA decline. EBITDA margin dropped from 9.7% to 5.9%, while net profit margin fell from 7.3% to 3.0%.
International and offshore exposure increases execution sensitivity. With 72% of 9M revenue generated internationally and 56% from offshore activities—and an even larger 76% international/71% offshore weighting in backlog—regional shipping, logistics, insurance and project-execution conditions have a meaningful impact on profitability.
Working-capital movements constrained cash conversion. Contract assets increased significantly as revenue was recognized ahead of invoicing, while client advances and job accruals declined. These movements resulted in negative operating cash flow despite positive underlying operating earnings.
Collections nevertheless remained strong. Management reported AED 13.4 billion of collections during 9M 2026, equivalent to approximately 95% of revenue, an important positive indicator despite the working-capital outflow.
5. Balance Sheet, Backlog & Cash Flow
Total Assets: AED 19.55 Billion (-4% YTD)
Current Assets: AED 15.20 Billion (-5%)
Total Liabilities: AED 13.80 Billion (-3%)
Total Equity: AED 5.75 Billion (-7%)
Cash & Bank Balances: AED 2.96 Billion (-34%)
Net Cash: AED 2.84 Billion (-32%)
Outstanding Debt: AED 118 Million
Net Working Capital: AED (714) Million vs. AED (1.64) Billion at Dec-25
Operating Cash Flow: AED (105) Million vs. AED 722 Million
Capital Expenditure: AED 314 Million vs. AED 396 Million
Free Cash Flow: AED (418) Million vs. AED 326 Million
Cash Dividends: AED 800 Million
9M Collections: AED 13.4 Billion
Current Backlog: AED 33.0 Billion*
September-End Backlog: AED 29.8 Billion
Project Pipeline: ~AED 80.4 Billion
9M Project Awards: AED 2.6 Billion
*Current backlog incorporates awards through 25 October 2026, explaining the difference from the September-end AED 29.8 billion figure.
NMDC Energy retains a strong net-cash balance sheet. Although cash declined 34% YTD to AED 3.0 billion, outstanding debt was only AED 118 million, leaving net cash of approximately AED 2.84 billion. The decline in cash primarily reflected AED 800 million of dividends, lease and tax payments, supplier payments intended to expedite material deliveries, and loan repayment.
Working capital improved from negative AED 1.64 billion at December 2025 to negative AED 714 million, but the underlying movement placed pressure on cash flow. Contract assets increased to AED 5.74 billion from AED 4.41 billion, reflecting revenue recognized but not yet invoiced.
Operating cash flow consequently turned negative at AED 105 million, compared with positive AED 722 million in 9M 2025. After AED 314 million of capex, free cash flow was negative AED 418 million, versus positive AED 326 million. Management stated that capex primarily related to construction of the KSA yard, UAE yard upgrades, equipment purchases and maintenance.
Despite near-term cash-flow pressure, the backlog remains a major strategic asset. The AED 33 billion current backlog represents approximately 2.3x 9M 2026 revenue, while the AED 80.4 billion pipeline provides substantial potential future award opportunities.
6. Investor Takeaway
NMDC Energy's 9M 2026 results present a clear contrast between strong commercial/revenue visibility and materially weaker project profitability.
The positive side of the investment case remains substantial. Revenue grew 9% to AED 14.2 billion, the company holds a AED 33 billion current backlog, the prospective project pipeline is approximately AED 80.4 billion, and the balance sheet retains AED 2.84 billion of net cash with only AED 118 million of debt. These factors provide considerable financial and revenue visibility.
The principal concern is margin compression. EBITDA declined 34% despite higher revenue, with the EBITDA margin dropping from 9.7% to 5.9%. Net profit consequently fell 56% to AED 420 million. The results demonstrate that backlog size alone is insufficient—the economics and execution margins of that backlog are increasingly important.
Cash conversion is the second major monitoring point. Operating cash flow fell to negative AED 105 million and free cash flow to negative AED 418 million as contract assets increased and client advances/job accruals declined. Nevertheless, AED 13.4 billion of collections, equivalent to 95% of revenue, provides some reassurance regarding underlying customer cash receipts.
The AED 800 million dividend distribution also exceeded the AED 420 million of 9M earnings and contributed materially to the decline in cash and equity. While the current net-cash position remains strong, the relationship between dividend distributions, free cash flow and earnings generation warrants monitoring if margin pressure persists.
Operationally, Q3 provides tentative signs of stabilization: revenue increased 5% QoQ, EBITDA margin reached 6.2% versus the 5.9% nine-month average, and net profit was broadly stable sequentially at AED 169 million. However, margins remain well below historical comparative levels, so a sustained recovery is not yet demonstrated.
The most important forward indicators are therefore EBITDA-margin recovery, normalization of logistics/insurance/fuel costs, conversion of contract assets into cash, new project awards, backlog execution quality, working-capital discipline, international/offshore geopolitical exposure, capex requirements and dividend sustainability.
Overall, NMDC Energy retains a strong balance sheet, very large backlog and significant project pipeline, but 9M 2026 highlights a shift in investor focus from revenue growth toward execution margins and cash conversion. A meaningful recovery in profitability will depend on controlling project cost overruns and easing geopolitical-related operating pressures while converting the substantial backlog into higher-quality earnings and free cash flow.
