Dana Gas has commenced industrial production of graphene at the Sharjah Graphene Park following the successful commissioning of its first LOOP 20 production unit in partnership with British advanced materials company Levidian.
The LOOP 20 unit is now fully operational and has annual production capacity of more than one tonne of high-quality graphene. The milestone comes just four months after Dana Gas and Levidian signed an MoU to develop the Sharjah Graphene Park.
Dana Gas and Levidian are already engaging with prospective customers across the UAE and wider GCC regarding long-term graphene offtake agreements, while several large-scale potential customers are conducting product trials.
The initial LOOP 20 phase involved an investment of less than USD 1 million. Additional LOOP 60 and LOOP 100 units are currently under construction in the UK and are expected to increase graphene production capacity in Sharjah to more than 10 tonnes per year before the end of 2026.
Once the additional units are commissioned, total capital investment in the project is expected to reach approximately USD 2.5 million. The project has further expansion potential, with total investment potentially reaching approximately USD 50 million as production scales and subject to long-term customer commitments and investment return requirements.
Levidian’s LOOP technology uses microwave plasma to break down methane, producing hydrogen and solid carbon in the form of high-quality graphene. Graphene has potential applications across batteries, tyres, concrete, coatings, polymers and other industries.
Dana Gas plans to develop Sharjah Graphene Park into the largest graphene production facility in the GCC and one of the first facilities globally capable of producing graphene at scale directly from methane.
