Space42 and Viasat have signed a binding agreement to establish Equatys, a shared space and ground infrastructure platform designed to expand direct-to-device and advanced mobile satellite connectivity globally.
Upon formation of Equatys, the two companies will initially commit USD 400 million each. Space42 is expected to contribute an additional USD 200 million in a future funding round open to third-party investors, bringing the combined equity commitments to up to USD 1 billion.
Equatys will enable smartphones, IoT devices and other connected devices to communicate directly with satellites, allowing mobile operators to provide voice, text and data services in locations where traditional cellular networks are unavailable or have limited coverage.
The platform will operate using a shared infrastructure model, allowing multiple satellite and spectrum operators to use common satellite and ground infrastructure while retaining their own customers, spectrum rights and commercial relationships.
The initial constellation represents the first phase of an architecture designed to eventually scale to as many as 2,800 satellites across 60 orbital planes and three altitude layers.
Space42 and Viasat together have commercial relationships with more than 400 mobile operators worldwide and access to more than 100 MHz of globally coordinated mobile satellite services spectrum for advanced satellite and direct-to-device services.
The formation of Equatys, satellite procurement and related agreements remain subject to customary closing conditions, including regulatory approvals and the appointment of Viasat as the platform’s prime technology contractor.
