NMDC Group Launches Region’s First Commercial Hydraulic Modelling Facility in Abu Dhabi

NMDC Dredging & Marine, a subsidiary of NMDC Group, announced the inauguration of the NMDC Coastal & Hydrodynamic Center, the region’s first commercial hydraulic physical modelling test facility for marine and coastal infrastructure.

The facility was unveiled during Make it in the Emirates 2026 and is designed to bring advanced marine engineering testing capabilities into the UAE, reducing reliance on international laboratories.

According to NMDC Group, the facility enables the simulation and testing of complex marine, coastal and offshore infrastructure under controlled conditions, supporting faster project delivery, improved design efficiency and stronger cost control.

The center allows engineers to model and validate the impact of:
• Waves
• Tides
• Currents
• Sediment transport
• Hydro-erosion
• Structural response on marine infrastructure

The facility can be used to test critical infrastructure projects including:
• Ports
• Breakwaters
• Sea walls
• Offshore structures
• Floating marine systems

NMDC stated that the center includes:
• A 3D wave basin
• A 2D wave flume
• Advanced digital wave-generation systems for stress testing marine structures under extreme environmental conditions

The company added that the facility supports the development and testing of offshore renewable energy systems, including wave, tidal and floating wind technologies.

NMDC Group stated that the project strengthens the UAE’s industrial localization strategy while enhancing the country’s engineering and innovation capabilities across infrastructure, maritime and energy sectors.

As of 31 March 2026, NMDC Group reported a backlog of AED 55.4 billion across its business verticals.
